STUDENTS FROM WEED HIGH SCHOOL PARTICIPATE IN 2024 SHASTA FORESTRY CHALLENGE

Shingletown, CA — Two students from Weed High School participated recently in the 2024 Shasta Forestry Challenge, one group of a total of 118 high school students from 19 schools from northern and central California. The event was September 25th to 28th at Mountain Meadows Camp, east of Shingletown, California.

One of the highlights for the students this year was the opportunity to assess timber available for harvest under a current Modified Timber Harvest Plan and project the landowner net income (or loss) based on their recommended harvest volume. During the Challenge, teams of students also completed a field test to assess their technical forestry knowledge and data collecting skills.

“The Forestry Challenge is always a great hands on learning experience for my students. I love seeing them gain an understanding of forestry through using tools and compiling data,” said Weed High School teacher Rebekah Sluss. Kayla Sullenger, a freshman at Weed High School, summed it up as follows: “This is a very fun experience if you want to learn about forestry.”
